My name is Scott Newkirk. I practice, explore, and teach Hakkoryu Jujutsu in Pasadena, CA.
Class format is small-group and semi-private. Any level of experience is welcome as the training is scalable to one’s experience and abilities. The training is meant to be safe and the atmosphere friendly. If you find it otherwise, please let me know. Times are arranged, when possible, to accommodate everyone’s schedules. We are currently holding classes on:
Sunday morning (9:30am-11:00am)
Monday evening (7:30pm-9:00pm)
Friday morning (9:30am-11:00am)
If these times don’t work for you, let me know and we’ll see what we can do:)
The fee is $100 per month. You’re welcome and encouraged to visit a class or try out the training to see if it’s a fit. If you decide you like our approach and want to study Hakkoryu, there is a new student registration fee of ¥8,000 (Yen) (about $80 as of April 2014) that goes to the Headquarters in Japan. For active students the annual renewal fee is ¥5,000. There are new techniques at each level, so advancing in rank has a very practical aspect to it. Promotions and belt advancement are something we can talk about individually.
Coyote Dojo is a small, home-based martial arts school. We’re all training to get better and to help each other improve. I like the people who study with me and consider them friends. Occasionally we have a BBQ or go out for a drink. Since it’s in my home it has the feeling that goes with it…and so, sometimes, the dog wanders onto the mat during class.
Oh yeah, we also mix it up a bit and work on Koho Shiatsu, exercises to develop the power of one’s center, Goshin Taisou (meridian exercises for health), and various key concepts. The curriculum rotates through these different areas and in a number of different ways. My goal is to give anyone who is interested a comprehensive exposure to all aspects of this fascinating art while progressively refining the core techniques and deepening our understanding and abilities.
